SAT Superscoring Explained

Should Your Child Retake the SAT?

Should your child take the SAT again? At most Florida universities, a retake can only help: they “superscore,” which means they keep your child’s best Reading and Writing score and best Math score, even if they come from different test dates.

This guide explains how superscoring works, which Florida universities and scholarships use it, and how to decide whether one more SAT is worth it.

SAT superscoring explained: best Reading and Writing 640 plus best Math 680 gives a 1320 superscore - UKE Tutoring parent guide

What superscoring means

The SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, each scored from 200 to 800. A university that superscores takes the best score in each section across all the test dates your child sends, and adds them together.

Reading and Writing Math Total
March SAT 640 610 1250
May SAT 600 680 1280
Superscore 640 680 1320

In this example, neither test reached 1300, but the superscore is 1320: 40 points higher than the best single test.

Which Florida universities superscore the SAT?

University SAT superscore?
University of Florida (UF) Yes: the highest score in each section
University of Miami (UM) Yes
University of Central Florida (UCF) Yes
University of South Florida (USF) Yes: the highest section scores across all test dates
Florida State University (FSU) Not stated on its website: ask FSU Admissions
Florida International University (FIU) Superscores the ACT; not stated for the SAT: ask FIU Admissions

Why superscoring matters for Bright Futures

The Bright Futures scholarship also superscores: it adds the best Reading and Writing score and the best Math score from any test date. For the Class of 2027, a 1330 qualifies for Florida Academic Scholars (100% of tuition) and a 1190 for Florida Medallion Scholars (75% of tuition); for the Class of 2028, the thresholds are 1350 and 1200. Scores count until August 31 of the graduation year.

So a student with a 1300 who only needs a stronger Math section can reach the Academic Scholars level without repeating a whole perfect test: one good Math section is enough.

Should your child retake the SAT?

A retake usually makes sense when:

  • The score is below the range of the universities on your child’s list, or just below a Bright Futures threshold.
  • One section is clearly weaker than the other. Superscoring rewards focusing on that section.
  • There is time to prepare: even a few weeks of targeted practice on the weaker section can make a difference, ideally with full practice tests along the way.

It may not be worth it when:

  • The score is already above the range of the target universities and above the Bright Futures threshold.
  • The next test date comes after the application deadline. Check which SAT still counts in our guide Your Last SAT Date for UF, FSU and Other Florida Universities.
  • Your child is exhausted and the time would be better spent on grades, essays or applications.

Does a lower retake score hurt?

At universities that superscore, a lower section score is simply not used: only the best section scores count. The College Board’s Score Choice also lets students choose which test dates to send to most colleges. A few colleges ask for all scores, so check each university’s policy before sending.

How to plan a retake

  1. Look at the section scores, not just the total, and pick the section with the most room to grow.
  2. Take a full practice test in Bluebook, the College Board’s free testing app, to see which question types cost the most points.
  3. Register early. The next SAT dates are December 5, 2026 (register by November 20) and March 6, 2027 (register by February 19).

Other questions parents ask

Does superscoring work for the ACT too?

Many universities superscore the ACT as well, including UF, UCF, USF and FIU. Some now leave out the Science section: check each policy.

How many times should my child take the SAT?

There is no official limit. Many students take it two or three times. Beyond that, gains often get smaller, and the time may be better spent on the rest of the application.

Do universities see every score?

Only the scores you send, at colleges that accept Score Choice. Some universities let students self-report scores in the application and ask for official scores later: follow each university’s instructions.
